How Long Does a First Aid Certification Last in Ontario?

Most workplace first aid and CPR certificates in Canada are valid for three years — but renewing on time matters for staying compliant.

If you have completed a first aid or CPR course, your certificate does not last forever. Skills fade over time and resuscitation guidelines are updated periodically, so certifying bodies set an expiry date on every certificate.

The standard: three years

In Canada, first aid and CPR certificates issued by recognized training organizations are generally valid for three years from the date of certification. This applies to common courses such as Emergency First Aid and Standard First Aid, both of which typically include CPR and AED training.

Your certificate lists the issue date and expiry date. Treat the expiry date as a hard deadline: an expired certificate no longer counts as valid proof of training.

CPR-only and healthcare-provider (BLS) certificates

CPR-focused certificates can follow a different cycle. Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers is often renewed more frequently because employers, regulators, or professional colleges may require annual or more regular refreshers. Always check the renewal interval required by your employer or licensing body, as it can be shorter than the certificate's printed validity.

Why workplace certifications must stay current

For Ontario employers covered by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), first aid coverage is governed by Regulation 1101 (First Aid Requirements). To count toward a workplace's required coverage, a worker's first aid certificate must be valid and unexpired. You can review the official requirements through the WSIB and Ontario's e-Laws.

Renewing before you expire

Plan to renew before your certificate lapses. Booking your next course ahead of the expiry date keeps your coverage continuous and avoids any gap where you are not certified. If your certificate has already expired, you may need to repeat the full course rather than a shorter refresher — policies vary by provider, so confirm with your training organization.

  • Note your expiry date the day you certify.
  • Set a reminder two to three months before it expires.
  • Confirm whether your employer or college requires a shorter renewal cycle.
  • Re-book early to keep your coverage continuous.
