WSIB First Aid Requirements for Ontario Workplaces

If your business is covered by the WSIB, Regulation 1101 sets out the first aid training, equipment, and records you must have in place.

In Ontario, first aid in the workplace is governed by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) through Regulation 1101, "First Aid Requirements." Employers covered by the WSIB are legally responsible for providing first aid equipment, facilities, and trained personnel. This overview explains the main duties in plain language — always confirm the exact details against the official regulation.

Who the requirements apply to

Regulation 1101 applies to employers covered by the WSIB's insurance plan. If you are unsure whether your business is covered, the WSIB can confirm your status and obligations.

What employers must generally provide

Under Regulation 1101, covered employers are responsible for:

  • Trained first aiders on every shift. At least one worker holding a valid first aid certificate from a recognized training provider must be in charge of first aid during working hours.
  • A stocked first aid station. A first aid box with the contents specified by the regulation must be kept clean, accessible, and properly maintained.
  • The WSIB poster. Employers must post the WSIB "In Case of Injury at Work" information so workers know what to do if they are hurt.
  • Records of training and treatment. Certificates of trained workers must be kept available, and a record of first aid treatment given to workers must be maintained.

The number of trained first aiders required and the size and contents of the first aid box increase with the number of workers on a shift. Smaller workplaces typically need a worker trained in Emergency First Aid, while larger workplaces require Standard First Aid. For the exact thresholds and box contents, consult the official regulation linked below.

Certificates must be valid

Only current, unexpired certificates count toward your workplace's coverage. First aid certificates in Canada are typically valid for three years, so build renewals into your safety planning so you never fall below the required number of trained first aiders.

How to stay compliant

  • Confirm your WSIB coverage status and obligations.
  • Count your workers per shift and match the required first aid level and box size.
  • Keep at least one validly certified first aider on every shift.
  • Post the WSIB injury poster and keep treatment and training records.
  • Track certificate expiry dates and renew before they lapse.
